Annotated Bibliography

Bhushan, Nivedita L. “Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities in Food Manufacturing, 2008.” Monthly Labor Review, 2011. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/monthlylaborrev.2011.01.075. Accessed 4 Mar. 2021.

Bhushan’s journal provides numerical data of injuries and accidents that occur in manufacturing. This journal mainly focuses on the food processing industry, which ties with my experience of working in a bread factory. The data in this article provides the type of injuries and illnesses that workers encounter. This will help me develop a possible solution towards workers’ wellbeing.

Delamotte, Yves, and Kenneth F. Walker. “Humanization of Work and the Quality of Working Life — Trends and Issues.” International Journal of Sociology, vol. 6, no. 1, 1976, pp. 8–40. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/20629726. Accessed 4 Mar. 2021

This article Delamotte and Walker discuss different aspects of the factory worker and the rights that they are entitled to. It provides information about humanisation of work. This article goes into the positives and negatives of improving certain aspects of improving the quality of worklife. I plan on relying on this to refine my proposed solution in factory life.

Gura S. T. (2002). Yoga for stress reduction and injury prevention at work. Work (Reading, Mass.), 19(1), 3–7.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12454346/

This is an interesting article by Shura because she provides insight on the topic of injuries amongst workers in the work setting. I plan on using this piece of text as an opening for developing my own wellbeing tool to better improve the workplace culture in manufacturing.

Schuman, Michael. “History of Child Labor in the United States—Part 1: Little Children Working.” Monthly Labor Review, 2017. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/90001351. Accessed 4 Mar. 2021.

This article by Schuman provides information of what jobs children took during the events of the civil war to the 20th century. This will help me in my research to help my audience know the manufacturing industry is different from other jobs such as retail. This text will help me identify how child labor has changed from the 20th century to the present.

Shershow, Scott Cutler. Bread. Bloomsbury Academic. 2016. Digital pp.1-104

Shelow’s book goes into depth about the value of bread. It is more than just a product that the general public consumes. I found it interesting because it discusses homemade bread vs processed bread. This will help me give an idea as to why my previous past job produced bread.

Sinclair, Upton. The Jungle. New York: Penguin Books, 1985. Print pp.1-413

Sinclair’s book provides a variety of scenes of poor working conditions in manufacturing. In addition, this book focuses on a group of immigrants settling into America to achieve the American Dream. The background and struggles of these characters really connect with my family’s experience in manufacturing. I will be using this book as a reference to create my mini storyboard concepts.
